The story behind the look

Ted Tinling designed Casals a white V-neck dress interrupted by purple scrolling panels. A patterned patch covered one shoulder, while a larger decorated panel ran down the opposite side of the skirt. The surviving garment reveals how carefully the print was placed.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame identifies the surviving outfit and its Wimbledon photograph as 1972. Its biography of Casals records that an official ordered her to change the purple-and-white dress because it breached tournament clothing policy.
