The story behind the look

Williams’s 2004 US Open wardrobe included a pleated denim miniskirt paired with a black embellished sleeveless top. Nike developed the denim with moisture-management properties, bringing an everyday fabric into a performance context.

The look also came with memorable tall boot-like coverings for the warm-up. Nike connected the denim idea to Williams’s recollection of Andre Agassi’s earlier on-court denim, adding another chapter to the sport’s unconventional wardrobes.
