For the opening match of what she had announced as her final tournament, Williams worked hands-on with Nike on a black dress inspired by figure-skating competition costumes. The sheer sleeves and crystal-studded bodice caught the light under the Arthur Ashe Stadium roof.
Its skirt carried six layers, one for each of Williams’s US Open singles titles. The symbolism made the garment a concise career retrospective: competitive, theatrical and designed around achievements that belonged to her alone.
