The story behind the look

Maria Sharapova returned to New York to defend her US Open title with a new night-match statement. She and Nike took inspiration from the city itself: apple red for the Big Apple, with more than 600 Swarovski crystals concentrated around the bodice. Contemporary launch coverage described the embellishment as an interpretation of the New York skyline. The result brought the atmosphere of eveningwear to a dress made for tennis.

She wore the red design on 28 August 2007 against Roberta Vinci, winning 6–0, 6–1 in 50 minutes. Its narrow shoulders, sculpted neckline and lightly flared hem kept the silhouette direct, letting the crystal composition provide the spectacle. The documented athlete concept and embellished match version make this an especially personal chapter in Sharapova’s partnership with Nike.
